A Little Teaser

Happy Election Day, everyone! Today I'm going to give you a little teaser of photos to come from our awesome day with Collin's family the last weekend of October! I want to share these three photos today to hold you over until I can get the rest of my photos uploaded! Hopefully I'll be able to by Thursday. It's another busy week for us!

We had an awesome day with our niece and nephew. First we played in the leaves!
I love my niece and nephew! And they really seemed to enjoy playing in the leaves!
The calm yesterday before the hurricane today.
Collin's sister took this one of us. It's a little blurry but I still love it!
And to continue our family day we went to the corn maze/pumpkin patch/farm!
They had so much fun playing in the corn box. Basically it's a sandbox filled with corn kernels!

I hope that you get out and vote today. Whoever you're voting for, get out there and do it! It's such a wonderful freedom and opportunity we have to choose the leaders of our country. Don't let that opportunity go to waste! You CAN make a difference!

A Day to Remember

DSC_1035

Scattered Horizons

Today marks the 11th Anniversary of the most horrendous attack on the United States. The day the world stood still because they couldn't believe someone would/could attack our nation. I remember it very well, I was in 10th grade and was walking between band and lunch (it was a little after 10 o'clock) and someone ran down the hallway screaming "WE'RE GOING TO WAR!!!". I didn't think much of it until I got to lunch and one of my friends told us that someone had bombed the World Trade Towers in NYC. Later I learned that it was two planes that crashed into the World Trade Towers and an additional plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Because of our proximity to D.C. and because we live in a very populous Navy town (they were afraid of another possible attack) we got sent home from school a few hours early and were even out of school for an additional 2 days. I remember leaving school and getting off the bus and my dad was waiting for my sister and I. He took us back to work with him because he knew we'd be a bit freaked out. I remember watching the news and seeing the videos of that morning's events replayed over and over again. I remember the devastation that encompassed our nation. I also remember the overwhelming sense of unity and compassion that encompassed our nation.

My friend Courtney posted this today and I want to share it with you all as well.

Have you ever thought, "Where was God on 9/11 when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked?" Well, I know where my God was on the morning of September 11, 2001, and He was very busy!

He was discouraging people from taking those four flights. Together they could accommodate more than 1,000 passengers, yet there were only 266 aboard. He was on those four flights giving the terrified passengers the ability to stay calm. Not one of the people who was called by a loved one on one of the hijacked planes mentioned that passengers were panicked, nor was there any screaming in the background. And on one of the flights, God gave strength to the passengers to overcome the hijackers.

God was also busy creating obstacles to prevent people who worked in the WTC from getting to work on time. The work day had begun, more than 50,000 people worked in the two towers, yet only 20,000 were at their desks. On that beautiful morning, God created scores of unexpected traffic delays, subway delays, and commuter train delays. A PATH train packed with commuters was stopped at a signal just short of the WTC and was able to return to Jersey City. And far more meetings were scheduled elsewhere than was usual.

God held up each of the two mighty towers for a half hour so that the people on the lower floors could get out. And when He finally let go, He caused the towers to fall inward rather than to topple over, which would have killed so many more people. The foundations of six surrounding buildings were demolished by the fall of the towers, but God held them up for many hours until all the occupants were safely evacuated.

And when the WTC and Pentagon buildings went down, my God picked up almost 3,500 of His children and carried them to their home for all eternity. He also sat down and cried that 19 of His children could have so much hate in their hearts, that they did not choose him, but another god that doesn't exist, and now they are lost forever.

He sent people trained in dealing with earthly disasters to save those that were injured. And he sent in thousands of others to help in any way they were needed. And He brought people together across the world in a way that moved thousands to tears and hundreds of thousands to prayer—and caused millions to turn to the one true living God.

He still isn't finished. Every day He comforts those who lost loved ones. He is encouraging others to reach out to those who don't know Him or believe in Him. He is giving the leaders of our great nation the strength and conviction to do the right thing, to follow His will, not a popular poll.

So if anyone ever asks, "Where was your God on 9/11?" you can say, "He was everywhere! And, in fact, he is everywhere today and every day." Without a doubt, this was the worst catastrophe most of us have ever seen. I can't imagine getting through such a difficult time without God at my side. Without God, life would be hopeless.

What an amazing perspective that story gives. I will always remember that even during the most tragic day I have experienced in my life thus far, God WAS there. He is here now and He always will be here. Amen.

Exploring a Fort

This is the last post I have from our anniversary trip in April. While we were down in NC this year we decided to take advantage of learning some history about Fort Macon! Collin was taught some of this stuff in school (since he grew up so close to the fort) but being a Maryland girl I never really learned anything about any fort except Fort Lincoln down at Point Lookout. Plus, Fort Lincoln was a Union prisoner of war camp and fort whereas Fort Macon was most definitely Confederate. It was interesting for me to learn some of the history about a Confederate fort! We really enjoyed our afternoon at Fort Macon and the weather was beautiful! It was actually very mild in temperature albeit windy! The fort itself was really rich with history and we were fortunate enough to catch a tour that was going on and got some great information from the guide!

The whole fort was pretty much connected from room to room. I loved how you could see down through the doorways for numerous rooms!

We were there one day before the 150th anniversary of the siege of Fort Macon. The battle started on April 25, 1862 (the day we were there) and many soldiers died on the 25th and 26th. They put these crosses out In Memory of the soldiers who were killed during the battle and they were placed in the location where they died.

It was a REALLY neat experience going to the fort. I had a great afternoon exploring and learning a little bit more about Civil War history from a different viewpoint (Confederate vs. Union). And I think it was especially neat that we were there on an anniversary date! To learn a little bit about Fort Macon's history you can visit here. But if you're ever on the Crystal Coast in NC go visit Fort Macon yourself! It's a really wonderful way to spend an afternoon (or morning).

The Gratitude Challenge - Day 10

1 Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.
Let the whole world know what he has done.
2 Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
3 Exult in his holy name;
rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
Psalm 105 (NLT)

Today I am grateful to live in a free country. I am grateful to be an American. I know the our country has its issues and I'm not getting into that here, but put aside all the financial and political troubles we're having and we're very lucky to live in this country. Collin and I went to D.C. today to be touristy and we took a tour of The Capitol building and though I'd learned about the history in school, watching the video at the beginning of the tour on the history of our country and the history of the building just filled me with such pride to be from this country. We are very privileged here and it's because of the hard work of our forefathers. Have you ever taken a tour of The Capitol? If not, I highly recommend it. It's very beautiful and you'll learn about our country's great history and different things that took (and take) place in the building!

and then, she {snapped}

After we were done with our tour of The Capitol we walked through the tunnel that connected The Capitol to the Library of Congress and walked around. It's a really cool place, too! Very much touristy in the parts we saw but that's because it's what is open to the public. I was absolutely in awe of the Reading Room. My only wish is that I could have gone into the Reading Room. It's been a dream of mine since I was a child. One day. I just need to come up with a project and a need to do research in there and then I can go!

After leaving the Library of Congress we hopped on the Metro and over to the American Art Museum to see just one thing.

That is the most amazing piece of artwork. Basically it's this colorful wall/floor display and then there's lights that are continually changing colors and directions that are shining on the display and it's creates the most amazing colors display. And it's absolutely incredible. The colors in the display are brought out and "hidden" by the different lights that are shining and it's just awe-inspiring. If you're ever in the American Art Museum, visit the Contemporary Art room and see this exhibit. Collin and I spent about 20 mins just staring at it yesterday. Our first time seeing it (a year ago) we watched it for about the same amount of time.

May the 4th Be With You!

I had a very fun Independence Day weekend! It all started Friday evening at the River Concert where we heard great music, spent time with fun friends, and watched beautiful fireworks! Then Saturday was a lazy day until Collin got off work and we went and had a game night with some friends. Sunday after church we ventured down to King's Dominion where it was ridiculously hot and crowded but we still had a good time. Then on Monday my mom's side of the family had a cookout/crab feast and I went while Collin worked. He was fortunately able to stop by on his lunch break and have lunch with us! I enjoyed spending time with my family and chatting with my cousins. Then in the evening once Collin got off work we had steaks, baked potatoes and corn on the cob with Collin's parents. Then we set off fireworks out in the street! So much fun!

Something really cool, we saw fireworks every night but Saturday night and the only night that God didn't show up the man-made fireworks was on Friday. Both on Sunday and Monday while the fireworks were going off there was lightning in the sky and slight rumblings of thunder. It was absolutely incredible. God's firework show was definitely better than all the man-made ones. I'm so glad I'm not scared of thunderstorms anymore (see this post) because I surely would not have enjoyed God's fireworks and I'm sooo glad I did!

Now onto the pictures from Friday night and two videos of the fireworks we set off ourselves. Here in Maryland it's illegal to have any fireworks other than ground-based ones. Not as fun as what some other states have but still fun and pretty nonetheless!
One of the songs called for random household appliances... There's a handheld vacuum, a giant vacuum, an edger, and a leaf blower.  They also had two people with muskets.
Dueling with feather dusters.  =)
We are serious listeners.
Alexis and Donna
Butch!
Kirsten
Collin and Devin were obsessed with Angry Birds during the second half of the concert.  lol
The grand finale!  It was very bright!
This one was just a short little firework that created very, very bright flashes of light.

This one was one of the last ones and the biggest/best. Notice how Collin throws in a little extra spinning one to left of the big one at about 25 seconds in!

I hope you had a great Independence Day weekend filled with lots of fun, family, good food, and fireworks!!
